Two Study Days on the subject

 "A new look at solidarity?"

Under the responsibility of Laura Llevadot (UB / LLCP), Àngel Puyol (UAB), Jordi Riba (UAB / LLCP) and Patrice Vermeren (Paris8 / LLCP)

Solidarity is a rising value, but at present is subject to various transformations. It is a rising value because the current crisis has highlighted the need to assert principles and values to help alleviate the worst evils of today's individualistic and mercantile society. And it is subject to changes because moral and social values that are derived from that individualistic and mercantilist society are eroding and changing the very idea of solidarity.

In this new scenario of contradictions and social changes, it is necessary to rethink the concept of solidarity, and see whether it is possible to help overcome, and in what way, the problems that democracy and current theories of justice cannot solve; namely, the enormous social and economic inequalities compatible with a conception of justice based on individual responsibility, and the lack of reasons for some individuals to meet the basic needs of others.

The aim of the workshop is: Can solidarity help overcome these problems provided that it is intended as a principle of justice (with liberty and equality), not as a mere complement to it? Should solidarity be conceived as a constitutive part of democracy, not as a superfluous addition to what defines a democratic society?

Another questions to analyse:

1. How the idea of solidarity is changing in the present context, dominated by the economic crisis, the decline of the welfare state, and the increasing individualistic perception of social risks.

2. Once clarified the factual and normative sense of solidarity, to find its place in a theory of justice committed not only to individual freedom and equal rights and opportunities, but also to social inclusion and social emancipation.

3. To check how solidarity is an inseparable part of democracy. Both forms of democratic participation and its results should not be understood without respect for the principle of solidarity and the social and economic rights and duties that it entails.

4. To analyze the role that can and must play solidarity in the context of globalization, taking into account various conflicts, such as the ethical demands of special moral duties to those closest, or the extension of the duties of justice beyond nation-states (within the debate on global justice).

5. To analyze all these issues in various areas of social life, such as health, labour, immigration, the media, and the inter-territorial and intergenerational relationships.
