Research

This section addresses the FMSH’s research and development (R&D) activities in the fields of applied semiotic engineering and digital multimedia in particular.
The term “semiotic engineering” refers here to using operational knowledge about the semiotics/semiology of data processing, specifically of content from the corpus of audiovisual resources, but also from multimedia resources in general.

Most of these activities have been entrusted to ESCOM, Equipe Sémiotique Cognitive et Nouveaux Médias (Cognitive Semiotics and New Medias Team), which is one of the FMSH’s R&D units.

ESCOM’s official site gives a detailed presentation of the research carried out, most of which has dealt with the semiotics of digital documents (primarily audiovisual), as well as with communications in a multilingual and multicultural context.

The ESCOM site also offers a library of online resources (reports, prepublications, thematic folders,…) as well as university-level courses (late undergraduate or graduate) in semiotics and communication (digital), audiovisual semiotics, media semiotics, and even intercultural communication.
ESCOM’s R&D work falls under a program called Audiovisual Research Archives (ARA) and its various cites and online video collections.
