The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation East-Central European Research Fellows Program

Created in 1993 with the support of the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation represented by the Council of American Overseas Research Centers (CAORC) in Washington, the Mellon program enables East-Central European scholars in the humanities and allied social sciences to carry out research during short residencies at institutes of advanced study (IAS) in Austria, France, Germany, Great Britain, Greece, India, Israel, Italy, Jordan, Norway, Netherlands, Spain, Turkey, and Yemen.
The Fondation Maison des Sciences de l’Homme (FMSH) in Paris acts as the operator and host institution in France. Mellon/FMSH fellowships are intended for young researchers (under 40 years old, PhD) from the following countries: Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Slovakia; Bulgaria, Romania; Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania.
The program is open to all disciplines in the humanities and social sciences. The candidates present an individual research project of their choice; interdisciplinary methodology is encouraged.
Mellon/FMSH fellowships are granted for three-month periods. All applications are evaluated and the finalists are selected by an international committee of experts in Paris (usually in April-May; notification of awards by the end of June).
In agreement with the CAORC, the FMSH has been able to set up a program for long-term post-fellowship follow-up. This program includes the possibility of re-inviting Mellon alumni, offering support in building “grass-roots” workgroups, organizing international seminars, workshops or colloquia, and preparing publications.
