Programme Directeurs d’Etudes Associés (Visiting Professor Program)
Created in 1975 at the initiative of Fernand Braudel with the support of the State Secretary for Higher Education, the “Programme Directeurs d’Etudes Associés” (DEA) is the oldest and most extensive international mobility program at the Fondation Maison des Sciences de l’Homme. It enables the FMSH to invite scientific personalities from all continents.
The FMSH currently has 72 positions for visiting professors. Twelve of them are reserved for the Indian sub-continent. These positions are mainly filled in the framework of the FMSH’s international programs and last from one to three months. They are only open to experienced researchers and holders of doctoral degrees (or equivalent) working in institutions of higher learning and research. Candidates must be under 65 years of age at the time of their stay in France. A commission composed of the science policy directors of the different international programs evaluates the candidates and makes proposals to the FMSH administrator, who makes the final decision.
Many internationally outstanding personalities have been invited to France through this program. Most often, they contribute to building and developing solid networks for scientific collaboration centered on the Foundation. They also play an active role in promoting French research abroad.
Some visiting professors include:
• Elie Barnavi, served as Israel’s ambassador to France ;
• Fernando Enrique Cardoso, former President of Brazil (1995-2003) ;
• Bronisław Geremek, personal advisor to Lech Wałęsa, President of Poland (1990-1995) ;
• Gyorgy Granasztói, served as Hungary’s ambassador to the European Union and NATO ;
• Andreï Gratchev, former advisor to Mikhaïl Gorbatchev.
