On the deep ecology of Arne Næss : a comparison of French and Norwegian ecology

25/05/2009 - 26/05/2009
25/05/09

Le Centre franco-norvégien / FMSH coorganise ce colloque international en mémoire de Arne Næss, en collaboration avec Hans Marius Hansteen (université de Bergen).

Arne Næss (1912-2009) was arguably the most prominent Norwegian philosopher in the 20th century.
In Norway, his teaching and textbooks influenced several generations of students and academics, and his intellectual and activist presence shaped the image of philosophy in the general public.
Internationally, his distinction between shallow and deep ecology became a major point of reference in debates on environmental issues in academic as well as political contexts.

The recent publication of Næss’ major work on ecophilsophy in French, Écologie, communauté et style de vie (Éditions MF, 2008), gives occasion to an assessment of various aspects of Næss’ contributions, as well as to further intellectual
exchange between Norwegian and French ecophilosophy.
