ESCOM’s R&D work falls under its Audiovisual Research Archives program (ARA) and its various cites and online video collections.
The majority of ESCoM’s R&D activities in the area of applying semiotic engineering to digital audiovisual resources is financed by French and European R&D projects, including the SAPHIR project (French R&D project on publication genres for audiovisual resources); the LOGOS project (European R&D project on republishing audiovisual resources for educational purposes from a multilingual perspective), and the DIVAS project (European R&D project on finding relevant content in huge databases of audiovisual data). A four-year (2006-2009) PPF (Programme Pluri-formation, or Multi-Topic Training Program) contract concluded with the Ministry of National Education, Higher Learning, and Research (MENESR in French) has enabled ESCoM to experiment with and use its R&D findings for the ARA.
