C'est un fait bien connu à présent que le Moyen-Orient vit depuis plusieurs décennies des problèmes politiques, économiques et stratégiques récurrents. Jusqu’à une date récente, ceux-ci n’empêchaient guère les Etats de se reproduire. Or, certains régimes sont tombés sous le coup de contestations sociopolitiques et éthiques d’une ampleur inédite, parfois après avoir épuisé tous les moyens de recours coercitifs dont ils disposaient. Loin de s’estomper, cette dynamique transformatrice touche quasiment toutes les sociétés arabo-musulmanes, dans leur diversité, qui connaissent aujourd’hui de profondes fractures de nature à remettre en cause leur équilibre, voire pour certains leur existence. Middle-Eastern Societies

A Program Covering a Large Geographical Area

The Near and Middle-East refers to a geographical area that covers the following countries: Iraq, Saudi Arabia, all the small States along the Arabian/Persian Gulf, Yemen, Iran, Syria, Lebanon, Palestine, Israel, Afghanistan, and Pakistan.

Program Objectives

Despite its historical, ethnic, linguistic, political, and economic differences, this region’s 370 million people and 15 States (plus the emerging Palestinian state) is highly structured by Islam.

The FMSH’s goal is ambitious: develop a program for building in-depth knowledge of Near and Middle-Eastern societies by facilitating collaboration and partnerships with researchers and local research institutions.

Since spring 2007, networks and multi-faceted collaborations have been being expanded into the scientific and scholarly world (universities of Marrakech, Bassora, Bagdad, Amman, Sanaa, Ottawa, and others). The goal is to build working groups that regularly bring together French, European, but especially Arab-Muslim researchers.

- Contemporary Iraqi society
- Shia Islam in the Middle-East (between Qom and Nadjaf)
- Anthropology of oil
- Tribes and power
- Wahhabite, Takfirist, Salafite, and Djihad movements.
