The FMSH’s Cooperation with Mexico: a Growing Relationship
Ambassador S.E. Carlos de Icaza’s visit in November 2007 provided the occasion for reiterating the reciprocal desire to continue enhancing current programs and to create new ones.
This visit led to signing a specific agreement with the Colegio de Mexico, as well as other agreements with the Universidad Nacional Autonoma de México (UNAM) (Coordination de Humanidades, some research institutes) and the Universidad Autonoma Metropolitana.

Numerous Programs are Already in Place
Program on Bioethics: the main partners in Mexico include the UNAM’s Institutes of Philosophy and Legal Studies as well as the Paris I law school (Pr. Catherine Labrusse, member of the European ethics committee).
The Economics Program (UAM-Ixtapalapa): “Industrial Cleanliness and the Pharmaceutical Industry” carried out since 2003 with ECOS-Nord resulted in a publication (2006) and allowed setting up an advanced studies program that will bring together in Paris in 2009 Brazilian and Indian colleagues specialized in other disciplines.
”Influence of the French Bank on the Makeup of National Latin American Banks” network led by Professors Carlos Marichal (Colegio de México) and Albert Broder (Paris XII) has, for many years, been supported via various invitations to research French bank archives (now open to the public) and to organize round tables with the University of Paris XII. This project on economic history concerns many countries of Latin America. One of our invitations, for example, was sent to a Haitian researcher focusing on all Caribbean countries.
The FMSH also supports a Franco-Mexican Anuies-ECOS Program, which has been made exemplary thanks to the effective working relationships between Mexican and French partners (Instituo Mora, University of Morelos; CNRS; Universities of Lyon and Montpellier). It is devoted to publishing as well to cultural transfers in the 19th century.
Thanks to the FMSH, the program on the socio-economic aspects of the contemporary world has, alone or in partnerships with other institutions, welcomed:
- Javier Aguilar, sociologist (UNAM), specialist on unions, who developed a one-year field research program with the INED and the EHESS.
- Ilan Bizberg, former director of international relations and professor of political science at the Colegio de México, has for many years been working with French teams on problems linked to democratic transition, unionism, and regional integration.
Horizons américains
C'est également dans cette optique que la collection « Horizons américains » des Editions de la FMSH a édité en 2009 le livre consacré à l'influence au Mexique de la presse et de l'édition française au XIXe siècle : L. Andries et L. Suárez de la Torre (coord.). Impressions du Mexique et de France. Impresiones de México y de Francia. Cet ouvrage a été présenté mars 2010 à Mexico par l'Instituto Mora et le CEMCA, Institut de recherche à l'étranger du MAEE-CNRS.
Le Collège franco-mexicain des sciences sociales
La FMSH a participé à la création et elle est entrée dans la gestion du Collège franco-mexicain des sciences sociales mis en place par les services culturels de l'Ambassade de France au Mexique à partir de diverses chaires de courte durée financées par le MAEE. Le dispositif a commencé de fonctionner à partir d'avril 2010 afin d'améliorer la mobilité des chercheurs dans les deux sens et de faciliter la constitution de projets communs, d'enseignement comme de recherche. La deuxième sélection sur appel à projets a eu lieu en janvier 2011.
Amérique latine et migrations
La FMSH entend développer sa politique de recherches transversales en incluant l'Amérique latine dans le réseau sur les migrations. C'est déjà le cas avec des chercheurs mexicains du Colegio de la Frontera Norte travaillant sur les aspects religieux et qui ont bénéficié d'une bourse de post-doctorants Hermès, puis d'invitations de DEA pour travailler dans un réseau incluant diverses institutions parisiennes et des équipes de FMSH. L'un de ces chercheurs a été sélectionné pour la chaire Alfonso Reyes 2009-2010. Il devrait en 2011 entrer dans le réseau de chercheurs participant aux activités du groupe que la FMSH consacre désormais aux phénomènes migratoires. C'est aussi dans cet état d'esprit qu'a été organisée une conférence-table-ronde du Professeur Tamar Herzog, de l'Université de Stanford, historienne spécialiste du monde andin invitée par la FMSH, intitulée : « The uses of History in Present-Day Debates Regarding Immigration and Emigration ».
