Research

:: China

The FMSH’s China program has two components:  mobility (mostly China to France), and scientific programs.  The FMSH uses its own resources to invite researchers whereas for the scientific projects it relies on its capacity to bring together national or international resources around mobilizing initiatives.

While the main partner up until the last decade was the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, today many visiting scholars come from the country’s leading universities, in particular Beijing (Beida, Qinghua), Shanghai (Fudan), Canton, Tianjin, as well as specialized laboratories that are dynamic and have significant means of collaboration.  Collaborations with Hong Kong are also developing.

Modalities

Missions and research stays made possible through:

- existing agreements
- Hermès post-doctoral fellowships for Chinese researchers under 40 years of age.  This fellowship program is co-financed by the MAE, MENESR, CNRS, and the FMSH
- visiting professor positions, a program put in place by the FMSH and which is used for hosting researchers between 40 and 65 years of age.

Three Major Components

Our exchanges currently revolve around three scientific programs:

• in economics, on the topic of development in the service sector with the municipality of Tianjin
• in history, which includes organizing a university session in the fall
• in literature on the topic “Chinese Literary Expression – French Literary Expression,” mainly alongside the ALIBI Program, which offers a space for creation and translation, as well as a place for reflection and understanding.

Partnerships

We should point out that institutional partners of the regular programs are both Chinese and French.

For collaborations in economics in the field of services, the Chinese partner is the Federation of Social Science Circles of Tianjin and the French partner is the EHESS’s Center for the Study of Modern and Contemporary China and the Asia Network.

Regarding collaborations in history (university session in the fall), the Chinese partner is the Chinese Society for the Study of French History, East China Normal University in Shanghai, the University of Zhejiang in Hangzhou.  French partners include the University of Paris 1 and more recently the University of Cergy-Pontoise.

For the literature program, which is supported by the National Center for Literature (CNL), partners include French institutions like the National Library of France, the French consulate in Hong Kong, the Alliance Française (Hong Kong, Nankin), or the French Cultural Center in Beijing as well as various universities and research centers in Beijing (Qinghua), Shanghai (Fudan, University of Shanghai), and Hong Kong (Lingnan University).
