In spite of the target directions laid out in 1992, currently the FMSH is not very present in Sub-Saharan and Southern Africa. However, it has been able to maintain a minor role in the region through its hosting programs:
Subsaharan Africa:
The FMSH originally formed a network for scientific collaboration bringing together African, French, and European researchers in line with a model for balanced cooperation created for a research program on Islam in the south Saharan region. These relationships were then resumed by the MSH in Nantes within the framework of the MSH networks.
Southern Africa:
Exchange programs with South Africa were put into place thanks to the agreement signed in late 1992 with the Human Science Research Council (HSRC) of Pretoria, and to cooperation with the French Institute of South Africa in Johannesburg. These programs are to be resumed at a later date.
North Africa:
The FMSH is highly present in North Africa via the Maghreb-France Cooperation Program.
