:: PIEA

The FMSH’s International Program for Advanced Studies was launched in 2001 in collaboration with Columbia University to promote joint research between researchers of various nationalities that work together on a well defined project for three months periods.

Such projects are evaluated twice: first by the FMSH Comité international d’évaluation (International Evaluation Committee) that meets in Paris, then by Columbia Institute for Scholar’s Scientific Committee at Reid Hall in New York.

The invited groups are housed at the Maison Suger where they typically organize a study day.  They also have access to office space in Reid Hall where seminars and meetings may also be organized.

All areas of research touching the social sciences, in the broadest sense of the term, may be examined.  This also includes the history of sciences, the socio-political approach to law, or economy, and not only the formally defined social sciences.

The essence of the program, the ways of applying, and the opportunities available to researchers for accepted projects are explained in detail on the program’s website, which also includes reports on the groups’ activities, references of the published works, and video recordings of symposiums or interviews managed by the FMSH’s Equipe Sémiotique Cognitive et Nouveaux Médias (ESCOM) (Cognitive Semiotics and New Media Team).

Since its creation in mid-2001 until 2007, the Program has sponsored sixteen projects.  The 62 foreign researchers that have already been invited have come from the United States (Stanford, Columbia, Chicago), Russia (Academy of Sciences, among others), Great Britain (Cambridge, London), China (Beijing), India (New Delhi, Calcutta), Brazil (Porto Alegro, Sao Paulo), and also Germany (Heidelberg, Hamburg, Berlin, Postdam), Italy, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Slovenia, Hungary, Turkey, Israel, Argentina, Chili, Uruguay, Senegal, Pakistan, and Nepal.
