University Press Shop
The University Press Shop (http://www.lcdpu.fr) in Paris’ 5th arrondissement is the bookstore of the Fondation Maison des Sciences de l’Homme. It is a mail-order bookshop specializing in works in the human and social sciences published by French universities and other major research institutions.
It currently includes catalogues from 18 publishers (Les Editions de l’EHESS, ENS Editions, Presses de la Sorbonne Nouvelle, Presses Universitaires de Bordeaux, Caen, Strasbourg..) and offers some 8,000 books and journals in many different disciplines: anthropology, archeology, ethnology, history, literature, psychology, sociology, political science, among others.
The catalogue plays a key role in diffusing French and Francophone scientific production.
Created as a relational database in line with the Onix standard, a standard that is widely recognized and used by publishing professionals (namely, the Cercle de la Librairie), the Shop’s website currently offers a catalogue that is representative of French scientific production in the human and social sciences.
The Shop’s catalogue already contains close to 4,000 overviews and summaries, and is constantly growing since editors have special online access allowing them to add new titles, cover pictures, author biographies, or press excerpts themselves.
Thanks to the Onix standard, this catalogue has become a major collective reference tool.
Though it mostly offers printed documents, it can also be used for online viewing and purchasing of electronic documents (text files or audiovisual products).
The main advantage for internet users is that they will find all types of specialized publications in the areas likely to interest them: a geographic or cultural area, an historical period, a given subject area, etc. There are three ways of performing a search: 1. a “Plain Text” search using a precise term (author name, word from a title, overview or summary, publication year, an ISBN…). 2. a search for an entire discipline or an entire sub-discipline. 3. and, by a batch of “tags,” a collection of different key words. Clicking on one of these words will display the list of corresponding publications.
The informed researcher or reader can hence perform advanced bibliographic and thematic searches. By subscribing to the Shop’s Newsletter, users can regularly receive personalized notices about new publications (Subscribe to the Newsletter).
A Complete Mail-Order Purchasing Service
In addition to its documentation service, the Shop has all the infrastructure (warehouse, billing and accounting department) needed for selling and quickly delivering many publications that are often thought to be impossible to find. It therefore ensures for the community of public scientific publishers an effective and complete service for promoting and selling their publications to a national and international public. It works in close collaboration with the Association des Editeurs de La Recherche et de l’Enseignement Supérieur (AERES).
Presence in Scientific and Cultural Events
Lastly, in its attempt to provide an ever-growing showcase of French and Francophone publications, the Shop ensures an ongoing presence in diverse types of scientific and cultural events (seminars, congresses, symposiums…). In particular, it participates in the Rendez-vous de l’Histoire (in October in Blois) and in the Rencontres du Livre de Sciences Humaines (in February in Paris).
